Plus Sean Gibson – great grandson of legendary slugger Josh Gibson\, and executive director of the Josh Gibson Foundation; and Bob Kendrick\, president of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. \nEstablished in 2022\, to coincide with the 50-year anniversary of Buck Leonard’s induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame\, the Buck Leonard First Baseman’s Hall of Fame has been created as a feature of significance for Rocky Mount\, that recognizes and celebrates positive role models for the residents and visitors of our community. \nFor consideration\, nominees must have had careers of marked accomplishment in baseball\, business\, and/or community service\, while consistently modeling qualities of\, integrity\, leadership\, determination\, and perseverance. DESCRIPTION:This special Negro Leagues Baseball Art Exhibit is a tribute to artist Darryl Matthews’ father\, Fran Matthews\, who played parts of 14 seasons in the Negro Leagues\, mostly with the Newark Eagles\, where his teammates included Hall of Famers Roy Campanella\, Monte Irvin and Leon Day. \nMore than 30 original works\, including Negro Leagues legends Satchel Paige\, Josh Gibson and of course\, Baseball’s Greatest Gentleman\, Buck Leonard will be on display in the Gravely Gallery at North Carolina Wesleyan University’s Dunn Center for the Perfoming Arts. \nStay tuned for more information regarding an opening night reception on September 22nd!

SUMMARY:Buck Leonard Day - Mayor's Proclamation
DESCRIPTION:On what would have been Walter “Buck” Leonard’s 115th birthday\, we will celebrate Rocky Mount’s greatest hero and “Baseball’s Greatest Gentleman”. \nBorn in Rocky Mount\, North Carolina in 1907\, Walter “Buck” Leonard overcame a humble upbringing to become the greatest Negro Leagues baseball 1st baseman of all-time.  From 1934 to ’50\, he captained the great Homestead Grays to 10 league championships and 3 Negro Leagues World Series titles. He was selected for a record 13 All-Star games\, earning a reputation as one of the game’s most feared hitters and greatest gentlemen. \nOn August 7\, 1972\, Buck Leonard and his legendary teammate Josh Gibson were inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. The “Thunder Twins” – Buck Leonard and Josh Gibson – became the first two men who played exclusively in the Negro leagues to be enshrined in Cooperstown. \nA Gentleman and Hall of Famer on and off the field\, we are proud to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Buck’s historic achievement with Rocky Mount Mayor Sandy Roberson and several other special guest speakers and dignitaries. \nDue to limited space\, this event is by invitation only but will be live-streamed on social media.

DESCRIPTION:The Thelonious Monk Saturday Academy is a distance learning\, pipeline to professions mentorship program\, designed to expose underserved youth to a wide range of professions and professionals. Our distinguished instructors hail from various states\, and in keeping with the excellence that is synonymous with Thelonious Monk\, they are leaders in their fields. \nThe academy is open to up to 42 kids from Rocky Mount\, and will begin Saturday\, April 17\, 2021\, 10:00am. -1:00pm. for students enrolled in Engineering (grades 4-12)/ Architecture (grades 9-12 Field Study) /Live Streaming (grades 9-12) All other disciplines will begin Saturday\, April 24\, 2021\, 10:00am-1:00pm. Although we are in session every Saturday\, each class will meet bi-weekly. Except for extenuating circumstances\, all students are expected to attend each session in which they are enrolled. Pilot program will end Saturday\, June 26\, 2021. \nSign up for free before April 16th.
