Children will have the chance to participate in a lively presentation by wearing reproductions of jerseys of famous players and reading short biographies of stars like Buck Leonard\, Jackie Robinson\, Josh Gibson\, “Cool Papa” Bell\, and John-Henry “Pop” Lloyd.\nEight Ballplayers from the Negro Leagues\, by Tina Hoggatt. A suite of portraits and oral history. Linocut and foundry type prints\, boxed with linen covers. Tina Hoggatt has created permanent public artworks including The Positions on the Field\, portraits of ballplayers in porcelain enamel installed on the upper concourse of T-Mobile Park in Seattle\nOct 18 – Historic Buck Leonard Leonard Home Tours \nTour the historic Walter “Buck” Leonard home and meet members of the Buck Leonard Association and our partners. The home at 605 Atlantic Avenue in Rocky Mount\, is where Mr. Leonard lived from 1934 during his Hall of Fame baseball career until his death in 1997. In May 2019\, the Rocky Mount City Council voted unanimously to officially designate the home as an Historical Landmark. SUMMARY:Thelonious Monk STEAM & Humanities "Saturday Academy" Youth Mentorship Program
DESCRIPTION:The Thelonious Monk Saturday Academy is a distance learning\, pipeline to professions mentorship program\, designed to expose underserved youth to a wide range of professions and professionals. Our distinguished instructors hail from various states\, and in keeping with the excellence that is synonymous with Thelonious Monk\, they are leaders in their fields. \nThe academy is open to up to 42 kids from Rocky Mount\, and will begin Saturday\, April 17\, 2021\, 10:00am. -1:00pm. for students enrolled in Engineering (grades 4-12)/ Architecture (grades 9-12 Field Study) /Live Streaming (grades 9-12) All other disciplines will begin Saturday\, April 24\, 2021\, 10:00am-1:00pm. Although we are in session every Saturday\, each class will meet bi-weekly. Except for extenuating circumstances\, all students are expected to attend each session in which they are enrolled. Pilot program will end Saturday\, June 26\, 2021. \nSign up for free before April 16th.
